T&I LOVES

The Weekend Australian - Travel - - Destination Europe - SUSAN KUROSAWA

BAZ Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby opens in May, but if you are headed to London in the next few months, get in the swing of the Roaring 20s at Claridge’s. The venerable art deco hotel has launched two-hour Charleston master classes in conjunction with ‘‘London’s finest flappers’’, the Bee’s Knees (pictured). Learn moves such as the black bottom, scarecrow, bunny hop and fishtail, plus a homage to Josephine Baker. Accessories provided include sequinned headbands, strings of pearls and satin elbowlength gloves. Retro styling tips are also offered to ‘‘aspiring bright young things’’. After all that exertion, participants are revived with a Flapper cocktail, originally created in honour of the opening of Claridge’s Ballroom in 1929. Available February 25, March 18, April 15 and May 13 from 6.30pm. More: +44 20 7201 1618; charleston@claridges.co.uk.
