THE freshly ren­o­vated Cathay Pa­cific First Class Lounge at The Wing, on level seven just past the im­mi­gra­tion coun­ters at Hong Kong in­ter­na­tional air­port, feels as chic as a de­sign-con­scious mini five-star ho­tel, with the bonus of loads of nat­u­ral light. Work­ing with sus­tain­able ma­te­ri­als such as bam­boo and eu­ca­lyp­tus, ar­chi­tec­tural firm Fos­ter + Part­ners has been in charge of the over­haul, in­clud­ing the in­tro­duc­tion of five Cabanas, each the size of a stu­dio pad, with spa­cious shower, full-sized bath, mood light­ing and day bed, plus 12 shower suites. The Haven din­ing area (now with twice the ca­pac­ity) features an ex­panded buf­fet and a la carte menu with wine pair­ings (try, say, the nicely spiced laksa-style noo­dles be­fore an evening flight to Aus­tralian ports and go straight to sleep on board) and a new Cham­pagne Bar by the en­try of­fers ‘‘a free flow of cham­pagne se­lec­tions’’. You don’t need to be booked at the ul­tra-pointy end of the plane to en­joy the high life in a sink-into Norman Fos­ter-de­signed leather arm­chair — the lounge, which is open from 5.30am daily un­til the last Cathay Pa­cific de­par­ture, is also avail­able to Di­a­mond Marco Polo Club mem­bers and Emer­ald OneWorld mem­bers.
