NEWfrom the Huka Retreats group is a splendid publication of more than 300 pages celebrating its trio of luxury properties — Huka Lodge in New Zealand, Dolphin Island in Fiji and Grande Provence Estate in South Africa. Worlds Apart ($NZ74.95) has a foreword by Bryce Courtenay, who passed away during the book’s publication process. Courtenay was a long-time friend of Huka Retreats founder and owner Alex van Heeren (pictured) and he writes warmly of the three hideaways, especially flagship Huka Lodge beside the Waikato River near Lake Taupo on the North Island. The picture book is full of gorgeous images by Geoff Mason — not just of the accommodation but surrounding landscapes, bountiful local produce and staff, including, on Dolphin Island, the amazing Dawn Simpson, hostess and honorary mother to those fortunate guests (like me) who have found shelter there.
