THE excellent Cafe Sopra, hidden behind displays of condiments in the Fratelli Fresh warehouse in Sydney’s Waterloo, was a favourite weekend lunch haunt. So news that this rustic bolthole would close was met with disappointment. Happily, the entire kitchen and floor-staff team, including head chef Brendan Wade, has popped up at a new location in Alexandria. Fratelli Fresh boss Barry McDonald has commandeered the old Buckland Hotel and turned it into his latest culinary hot spot, including a reimagined version of his first Sopra outlet, plus bar, coolroom stocked with fruit and veg, and a section selling condiments. It’s the latest addition to McDonald’s expanding empire and while it has a very different feel from Waterloo — bigger, louder and with outdoor seating — we like what we’ve seen. A newly introduced wood-fired oven (pictured) means pizzas are now part of the repertoire and, unlike its predecessor, Sopra Alexandria is open for dinner. More: fratellifresh.com.au.
