HOME AND AWAY

The Weekend Australian - Travel - - Destination Afloat - SUSAN KUROSAWA

THE name of this hotel sounds nice and beachy, and so it is. Jetwing Blue is at Negombo, 12km from Colombo’s Bandaranaike airport, and has the feel of a resort with direct sea-and-sand access and simply designed guestrooms with tiled floors, crisp white linen blinds and casual decor. Most flights from Australia (via ports in Asia) arrive in Colombo in the middle of the night, so it’s bliss to wake up to the gentle sounds of waves and the jetlag-clearing prospect of a walk on the beach and excellent egg hoppers from the substantial buffet spread in the open-sided Kitchen restaurant. The accommodation comprises 82 deluxe, 21 super deluxe and three family rooms as well as six suites, but I am more than content in the basic category, with tons of space and a rainshower with plenty of power. I don’t have time to try the spa before I head up-country but the menu promises enticements such as antipollution purifying body scrubs plus sandalwood, turmeric and honey wraps. The well-regarded Jetwing Hotels group operates 19 properties in Sri Lanka, including the Geoffrey Bawa-designed Jetwing Lighthouse at Galle.
