HERE is a new scheme from Virgin Australia that we reckon is the cat’s pyjamas. In a first for an Australian airline, members of the Velocity frequent-flyer loyalty program can now earn points for their accompanied cats and dogs — such as Chili the border collie and Bolt the marmalade cat (pictured) — when the pets are boarded in approved carriers on domestic flights. There’s a minimum of 300 points for each pet on any sector (maximum two per booking) and silver, gold and platinum Velocity members earn extra points worth 50 per cent, 75 per cent and 100 per cent, respectively. Guidelines for pet carriers are available on the airline’s website; when weighed with the animal, the total must not exceed 65kg. Virgin Australia carries about 30,000 pets a year, including aviary birds and aquarium fish, which could be part of the scheme in the future. Aside from points for travel, quotas can be used to buy pet products from Velocity partners. More: virginaustralia.com.
