LAUREN Tewes may not be a household name but her character of perky blonde cruise director Julie McCoy from series was one of the most recognisable faces on television in the late 1970s and 80s. Tewes (pictured second from left with the original cast of the show on a visit to Sydney in 1983) is cruising again this weekend on a quick coastal hop aboard Sea Princess from Sydney to Brisbane. She’s launching Princess Cruises’ 2014 season, including new round-trip options from Brisbane, as well as celebrating her 60th birthday this week. Tewes and fellow stars of (appropriately togged up in nautical attire) were chosen as ‘‘godparents’’ to launch Dawn Princess at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 1997. When fans of meet Sea Princess in Brisbane on Monday, perhaps they’ll take the opportunity to quiz Tewes on the whereabouts of Gavin MacLeod (aka Captain Merrill Stubing), that smooth silver fox of the seas, also rumoured to be Australia-bound with Princess Cruises next year.
