THE INSIDERS CAPE TOWN

The Weekend Australian - Travel - - Travel & Indulgence - FRANCESCO GALLI ZUGARO

EAT:

The beach club-style Bungalow Restaurant and Lounge has a laid-back feel and a great seafood selection; sit on the umbrella-shaded terrace overlooking the ocean. The Pot Luck Club is a fantastic spot on the top floor of the historic Silo at the Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock — wonderful tapassized sharing plates. Or for fresh seafood platters, head to Harbour House Restaurant on the harbour at Kalk Bay (there’s a sister restaurant at the V&A Waterfront overlooking the comings-and-goings of tugs and ferries); thebungalow.co.za; thepotluckclub.co.za; harbourhousegroup.com.

STAY:

The mansion-style Ellerman House, 10 minutes from the city, has views of the Atlantic coastline and across to Robben Island; it’s beautifully appointed, with excellent service and a choice of villas, suites or rooms. Perfect for family stays, the selfcatering accommodation at Blue Views Villas at Camps Bay is very spacious and has a scenic outlook, plus it’s a short walk to Bakoven Beach, which is an exquisite hideaway; ellerman.co.za; blueviews.com.

EXPLORE:

Head out to Cape wine country for cellar tastings and estate visits; pretty towns, such as Franschhoek, have oak-lined streets and an old-world charm. For a treat, take lunch at Delaire Graff Estate at Stellenbosch, a Relais & Chateaux member property that also has lodge accommodation with private pools and uninterrupted views of the valley; delaire.co.za; relaischateaux.com.

WILDLIFE:

Don’t miss the colony of African penguins ( Spheniscus demersus) at Boulders Beach, part of the Table Mountain National Park. My tip is to go to neighbouring Foxy Beach for an up-close experience; southafrica.net.

DRINK:

The Leopard Bar at The 12 Apostles Hotel & Spa is a top place to unwind, with an impressive selection of cognacs and ports, and there’s also a Tea by the Sea afternoon spread; 12apostleshotel.com.

SHOP:

Wander through myriad antiques stores at the V&A Waterfront and on the first Sunday of each month there’s an antiques fair at the Craft Market; waterfront.co.za.

Aqua Expeditions operates three luxury boutique river cruisers, Aqua Amazon, Aria Amazon and, most recently, Aqua Mekong, which runs three, four or sevennight cruises between Cambodia and Vietnam. More: aquaexpeditions.com.
