THE INSIDERS SNOWMASS, COLORADO

The Weekend Australian - Travel - - Travel & Indulgence - HUGH TEMPLEMAN

GO: Snowmass is a charming village nestled in a spectacular valley of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. Renowned as a ski resort, it’s also the ideal base for a summer getaway. Average temperatures hover around 24C and there are more than 300 days of sunshine a year, which always delights visitors. Festivals, special events, music and more take place throughout summer and there is a real buzz; gosnowmass.com.

EAT: Eight K is my favourite dining option. Chef Will Nolan has created a high-mountain cuisine laced with his southern American roots. Lamb and trout dishes are specialities and produce is locally sourced. Eight K also features cocktails using Colorado spirits, served at a glamorous bar designed by Jean-Michel Gathy; viceroyhotelsandresorts.com.

EXERCISE: With more than 80km of hiking and biking trails, Snowmass is a mountain biker’s heaven, whether you’re looking for the rush of the Gravity Trail or the more gentle Verde trails. There is also sublime cycling, including a favourite ride of mine from Snowmass to the Maroon Bells, which is a road not open to vehicles in the summer months. An easier loop is from Snowmass to Woody Creek and back on the scenic McLain Flats and Owl Creek roads. The Woody Creek Tavern is a great pit stop for margaritas. The active traveller can try fly fishing, golf and whitewater rafting; woodycreektavern.com.

ENJOY: Snowmass Rodeo takes place every Wednesday evening in the summer and families, in particular, love the barbecue dinner, roping demonstrations, campfire sing-a-long and marshmallow roast; snowmassrodeo.org. For some great music, grab your blanket and picnic basket and head to one of Snowmass’s free summer concerts. Dance the evening away to bluegrass, cajun, country music or just good old rock’n’roll; gosnowmass.com/events/.

BUY: At Anderson Ranch Art Centre, housed in historic ranch buildings, you can watch artists at work and buy a unique piece or enrol in an arts workshop; andersonranch.org.

STAY: Of course I am partial to Viceroy Snowmass, our luxury hotel with great accommodation, dining and spa. But one of the best things about Snowmass is that practically all places to stay are on the mountain, which means you have adventure on the doorstep; viceroyhotelsandresorts.com/snowmass.
