CHECK IT OUT THE NEW YORK EDITION

The Weekend Australian - Travel - - Travel & Indulgence -

Ian Schrager’s fourth hotel for Marriott International’s Edition lifestyle brand has opened in a New York landmark, the 1909 Clocktower on Madison Square Park, formerly home to the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and for a brief time the tallest building in the world.

Ideally located in NoMad, an up-and-coming precinct wedged between uptown and downtown, the hotel features 273 guestrooms and suites affording great views of Madison Square Park, Empire State Building or the city skyline. Each guestroom has a warm, residential vibe, inspired by the private clubs and mansions of New York’s socalled Gilded Age. The fit-out might be contemporary and understated but there are enough old-world luxuries — fragrant Le Labo lotions, faux fur throws and customised mini bars — to make every chamber feel like your own NYC pad. This homey mood is accentuated by a dark oak-panelled entry foyer and custom furniture and accessories that include walnut bed headboards, white oak desks, silk upholstery, hand-tufted rugs and large black and white photos from fashion photographer Melvin Sokolsky’s 1963 Bubble series.

Mod cons include large flat-screen televisions, Bluetooth speakers and gratis high-speed Wi-Fi, while iPods and iPads are available on request. The room inventory includes three large penthouse suites on the 29th, 30th and 31st floors, commanding brilliant views. Downstairs, the lobby is a roll call of design must-haves: Jean-Michel Frank-inspired coffee tables, Christian Liaigre-designed floor lamps and silk drapes, and Alvaro Aalto lounge chairs all set about a hand-forged steel fireplace and a dramatic white oak staircase. Further facilities include a 24-hour fitness centre and a small day spa.

DON’T MISS: A drink in the downstairs lobby bar overlooking the park through floor-to-ceiling windows.
