VALE BARRY OLIVER

The Weekend Australian - Travel - - Front Page -

Former T&I staff member Barry Oliver has passed away after a long illness. British-born Barry became known as Baz almost the minute he moved to Australia with his family and he was always fondly known by that nickname in the offices of The Australian. Baz will be remembered for his wry sense of humour, his passion for the music of John Denver and his love of a well-crafted ale, including his own home brew. He showed great attention to detail in roles that included features sub-editor and stints as deputy editor and production editor of Travel & Indulgence from the mid-1990s until his retirement in 2009. Baz was an admitted “mustn’t grumble” kind of traveller who claimed his most memorable T&I assignment was on a “budget-friendly” trip to London where he was checked into a pub guestroom with no window. When he asked for an upgrade to a room with natural light, he was shown another and, sure enough, it did have a window but when he drew the curtains, it looked into a corridor piled with boxes. Of course this was readymade material for one of his always amusing travel features. Bye, Baz, you were one of a kind.
