‘I’d never heard of Ladakh and was fas­ci­nated by the name … It was ac­tu­ally a part of In­dia — the high­est, most re­mote, least pop­u­lated re­gion in the coun­try … Many Ti­betan peo­ple had fled to Ladakh when China first in­vaded Ti­bet. I made a men­tal note that this was some­where I should go … I be­gan the 14hour drive into the moun­tains with my legs wedged up against the wooden back­board of the seat in front of me. As al­ways, my legs were too long for me to sit com­fort­ably in an Asian bus.’
