What’s new and super-cool? Skiing in Antarctica, that’s what. Australia’s Chimu Adventures is breaking icy ground with a new sail-and-ski adventure to Antarctica. Exclusivity is the drawcard with just five passengers joining Icebird, a crewed purpose-built yacht offering expeditions that include sea kayaking and skiing virgin terrain. The operator says participants must have a “reasonable level of fitness” but be warned this sounds much more likely to be undertaken by fearless travellers, with experience skiing blue or black runs and willing to undertake training in roped glacier climbing and crevasse rescue. Team members will also need an “expedition mentality” and be willing to lend a hand to sail the yacht, take a watch at sea and help with deck and galley chores. The 28-day round trip from Ushuaia, Argentina, starts at $35,205 so it’s not for the faint of budget either. The trip departs November 19, 2017 and includes training, safety gear, use of satellite phones and email, accommodation in Ushuaia, skis, kayaks, sleds, mountaineering equipment and meals.
