The best bars at sea

The Weekend Australian - Travel - - DESTINATION AFLOAT - LOUISE GOLDSBURY

Gastropub is not the most palatable term to use on a cruise ship, nevertheless that’s the official descriptor for Salty Dog on Emerald Princess. Set within the Wheelhouse Bar, it’s home of the Ernesto, a juicy burger spiced up with kimchi, beer-battered jalapenos, gruyere and pork belly. Rated the best burger at sea by Cruise Critic, it lines the stomach for my pub crawl that continues to the Crooners Lounge for a choice of 52 martinis and ends at the Outrigger, with dreamy views from the ship’s wake to the horizon.

Most cruise ships have a novelty bar to draw in drinkers (also known as big spenders). One of the best is Celebrity Solstice’s ice-topped Martini Bar, where the bartenders perform alcoholic acrobatics. I once watched a mixologist join together 18 cocktail shakers containing 18 different drinks and then raise the “snake” above his head and pour them into 18 glasses.
