A candle with distinct Australian bush notes or a sense of summer holidays sounds like a blooming good idea for Mother’s Day. Sydney Fragrance has launched a Scent of Australia collection of 10 varieties of 360g soy-blend candles based on beaches and botanicals, outback Australia and, perhaps a little obliquely, opera performances. The range, each priced at $39.95, with up to 80 hours of burning time, comes in translucent white glassware with suction-fitted woodgrain lids; there are two wicks per candle. The Florist candle features fresh grass, freesia and hyacinth; the Opera has been “inspired” by classical music performances at the Sydney Opera House and smells of orange blossom, gardenia and jasmine. There’s even a musky one for the chaps, in the form of Alpha, all grapefruit, cedar and amber. But it’s all about Mum on Sunday, May 14, so let’s go for Wonderland, inspired by the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. It’s a mix of green apples, pine needles and moss. Oh, and you can’t go wrong if you take Mum out for a Devonshire tea. I am up for an earl grey, scones, strawberry jam and clotted cream candle, by the way. More: sydneyfragrance.com.
