THE FAB FOUR MAJORCA RESORTS

The Weekend Australian - Travel - - DESTINATION EUROPE - BEN CLATWORTHY, TOM CHESSYRE

HOTEL BONSOL: This family-friendly, sporty hotel is 8km from Palma, capital of the island of Majorca in the Baleriac group, and comes with a dear little beach reached via sub-tropical, treefilled gardens. Sun-loungers are arranged on terraces overlooking the beach and calm, turquoise water facing the Bay of Palma. There are two swimming pools and a spa with a hammam and wellness focus, such as physiotherapy treatments, plus two tennis courts, squash court and an area for playing petanque. Guestrooms and suites are simply decorated but well laid out; hotelbonsol.es. IBEROSTAR GRAND HOTEL: The little sandy beach on a stretch of coast near Palma will have a new addition this month: an avant-garde, arty hotel created by the renowned Dutch interior designer Marcel Wanders. Iberostar Grand Hotel Portals Nous coats a spaceage, cave-like spa and guestrooms with striking modern art. The hotel hopes to attract the super-yacht set that gathers at the nearby Puerto Portals marina. The hip cocktail bar overlooks the water. It’s adults-only (two of the more risque suites have round beds and ceiling mirrors); iberostar.com/en. CAP ROCAT: Nestled in a secluded port of the Bay of Palma, this former 19th-century military fortress has been transformed into a seriously cool and chic hotel, with a small private beach overlooking the bay. Spend days flopped on one of the handful of sunloungers, before retreating to the fortress at sunset. Dine by one of the infinity pools. Check into one of the Sentinel Suites, which are hidden in the rock, on the edge of cliffs; each has a private pool and unobscured water views. It reopened for the springsummer season on March 15; caprocat.com. ROYAL HIDEAWAY FORMENTOR: At the foot of the Cap de Formentor peninsula, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the five-star Royal Hideway sits at the heart of a 1200ha private estate, with direct access to Formentor Beach, which has blue flag status (clean, safe). A hotspot for the A-list set in days gone by — Audrey Hepburn, Charlie Chaplin and Winston Churchill — the hotel has a good-sized swimming pool flanked by palm trees and sun-loungers, plus six restaurants. The beach becomes very crowded, particularly during school holidays; barceloformentor.com.
