HERITAGE REIGNS: If you want impeccable fivestar style, Mediterranean views and a sense of h history, then The Phoenicia, a member of Leading Hotels of the World, is the prime pick; it was opened in 1947 and fully refurbished last year. More: lhw.com; phoeniciamalta.com.

Casa Ellul is a small heritage hotel within the walls of Valletta and opposite the Carmelite Church; it boasts myriad balconies, gorgeous guestrooms and a chic ambience. Look for packages that combine Casa Ellul and Xara Palace in Mdina. More: slh.com; casaellul.com.

A more modest option, and one I love, is the friendly, family-run Hotel Juliani overlooking Spinola Bay. A glass of the local bitter orange specialty, kinnie, is offered in the lobby lounge to arriving guests; aqua-accented guestrooms are airy and spotless and its award-winning in-house Asian restaurant, Zest, is terrific.
