A new Abercrombie & Kent itinerary in Tamil Nadu, southeast India, comes with a warm and cosy layer of community involvement. Under the operator’s Hosted Small Group Journeys banner, the 12-day Women Hand in Hand tours, departing March 20 and October 10 next year, are limited to groups of 18, and a contribution from each tour fee will be made to provide one month’s employment for local knitters and further skills training for five women. It’s all part of an initiative in conjunction with the fair-trade Knit One Change One project run by Australian hand-knit expert Danielle Chiel who has set up a co-operative where village women hand-knit high-quality fibres, making world-class fashion garments and earning valuable income for their families. KOCO offers a paid seven-month apprenticeship to these knitters and meeting those involved is an itinerary highlight on this round-trip from Chennai, which also includes Kanchipuram, Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry and Thanjavur. Excluding international airfares, the tour is $7435 a person twin-share; for single supplement, add $2199. More: abercrombiekent.com.au; koco.global.
