The main Four Seasons Jimbaran resort also has two-bedroom villas and Family Premier configurations with larger pool areas. Residence Villas include breakfast, Wi-Fi access, 24-hour private butler, free resort meals for children five years and under, and return airport transfers. More: foursea

plunge pools across every category. This cool blueprint has been much copied across Asia but the earthed, organic and authentically weathered nature of Four Seasons Jimbaran continues to keep it a market leader.

Those plunge pools are now about 32 per cent larger. The new-look timber floors, redesigned sundecks and outdoor pavilions, plus pastel textiles in summery shades, lend a floaty, almost untethered feel. The Residence Villas, however, are still traditional in decor, with painted armoires, carvings in stone and teak, and a more intricate overlay of Balinese design. On banquet-worthy tables, tremendous wooden bowls are refilled with tropical fruit, as if by fairies, and pots of orchids and votive arrangements of golden flowers are in abundance.

Aryo is downcast when we leave and not just because we have had good laughs and an easy-breezy stay. His suggestions of excursions have gone unheeded, his proffered maps unread, our driver on standby is bored to the rafters. Even our shopping bags are so small Aryo doesn’t need to repack our suitcases, which he finds most unsatisfactory. We have to assure him we have had an absolute ball doing just about nothing at all.
