Trump’s role in China

The Weekend Australian - - COMMENTARY -

Donald Trump may not have realised it, but he was in the traditional role of the supplicant, tributary state ruler asking the Chinese President Xi Jinping for favours (“The odd power couple”, 10/11).

Trump’s effervescence about their relationship reinforced his role. Xi’s silence on that topic, his stonewalling on North Korea and the gift of meaningless memos of understanding, emphasised the power of someone who knows what he wants against the amateur who wants to be flattered.
