The issue of religious freedom in nongovernment schools is complex, but no less complex than age discrimination (“Coalition to consider religious discrimination act”, 11/10).
Unlike sex-related discrimination, where it is easy for right or left to get their knickers in knot, age discrimination is rampant in Australian society, yet culturally accepted.
All an employer has to do to get away with age discrimination is to emphasise their youth culture. Somebody over 50 is not going to fit into a youth culture. Similarly, a gay student or gay teacher is not going to fit into a Christian or Muslim school culture. Peter R. Tredenick, Paddington, Qld
