SOMETHING FOR KATE

ROLLS. PERFORMING ON STAGE TOGETHER FOR THE FIRST TIME IN FOUR YEARS AND SPOKE TO SFK’S BASS PLAYER

ABOUT THEIR NEW SONGS, KIDS, SCIENCE GEEKS AND THEIR STRANGE NAME.

We ( lead singer Paul Dempsey and I) have a son called Miller. He’s two years old. I don’t think it ’s affected the music – most of this record was written before any of them were born. I think your art, what you do and have been doing your whole life is very separate from what goes on in your personal life. We’re definitely not one of those bands that’s writing songs about being parents; I couldn’t think of anything more dull. It ’s lovely, don’t get me wrong, but it ’s not us.

DO YOU WANT TO SEE MILLER GET INTO MUSIC, TOO?

I don’t know if I have a choice in the matter, I think he’s probably drawn to it. He’s already drawn to the piano and guitar and drums.

HOW DID THE BAND GET ITS NAME? WHO’S KATE?

That was decided before I joined the band ( in 1999). Kate was Paul’s dog, and there was a post- it note on his kitchen table saying, ‘ Get something for Kate’, because I guess someone was going to the store. They needed a band name quickly back then because they had shows booked and they were being pressed to get a name for the ad in the newspaper. I think Paul was on the phone to the manager, and he said, “Have you got a name?” and Paul said, “Let’s go with Something for Kate.” And he’s hated it ever since. It’s probably the worst decision made.

DID PAUL CONSIDER CHANGING THE BAND’S NAME? WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE COVER YOU’VE DONE?

I do like the most recent one; I took the photos for inside the booklet and the front cover. We were living in New York and I took the covers of the single and album in Soho.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN FIVE YEAR’S TIME?

I think we’ll probably be making another record. Paul usually does a solo record, and then we’ll probably do another Something for Kate. His solo album was more successful than he thought, so he toured for longer and longer, we had to say, “Hey stop that, come back!” Something For Kate are playing at Tanks Arts Centre on Saturday, June 22.
