The Cairns Christ­mas Lights Ride will start and fin­ish at the Cairns Es­planade La­goon and is a slow-paced ride for all ages. Add lights and bling to your bike. The event will raise money for Ron­ald McDon­ald House Char­i­ties. En­try is $12 per per­son or $36 for a group of four. Since his stud­ies at the Na­tional Art School in Syd­ney, the Char­lie Sheard Stu­dio School and the Ju­lian Ash­ton Art School, Bon­neau has fo­cussed on por­trai­ture and fig­ure paint­ing. For Bon­neau, a por­trait is the most in­ter­est­ing and chal­leng­ing sub­ject. Sim­i­lar to por­traits of the Re­nais­sance pe­riod, his painted fig­ures em­body much of a clas­si­cal re­al­ist tra­di­tion. Of­fi­cially open­ing last night,

ex­am­ines the im­pact of the Far North on the Cairns-born artist’s ca­reer through a sur­vey of works from the 1980s to to­day. Smith con­sis­tently resturns to the city of his child­hood throught he sub­ject matter of his paint­ings. Im­agery of fam­ily sits com­fort­ably amongst land­scapes of the re­gion – from the reef to the rain­for­est and the high­ways that in­ter­sect. Through this, Smith con­structs a nar­ra­tive that ex­plores the dy­namic evo­lu­tion of the re­gion that he still calls home.
