The Weekend Post - Cairns Eye - - Social Butterfly 2017 - WORDS: GRACYN MARSTERSON

Love wasn’t the only thing in the air at the special Valentine’s Day event at Suprimo on the Marina, so was the hunger-inducing aroma of crispy pork belly risotto.

I will let you in on a little secret, this was my very first Valentine’s dinner, so I didn’t know what to expect. I certainly felt like a queen as I was seated and treated to a glass of champagne, which went down a little too easily, as I got caught up in the view of the marina and the soft scent of ocean breeze.

I looked at the lovers around me and recognised a few wellknown locals, including restaurant owner Michael Hooper who told me he got his love for fresh produce and authentic Italian food from his Nonna. Her recipe book has been inspiration for many authentic Italian dishes.

Lovebirds Matthew DiSalvo and Cassie Jashar wore their love story like a badge. Matthew said they met at Gilligans. “I promise I was much more of a gentleman after that,” he said.

“I took her for ice cream and I then asked her out over Facebook. We have been together ever since.”

So I had to ask Mr Hooper whether he likes to cook.

“Hell no,” he said. “That is why I invest in talented chefs. The way I see it, their passion is in the kitchen, my passion is out here entertaining and mingling with the public.”

Lot’s of love from your valentine, the Cairnseye Social Butterfly.
