NEW re­search shows many Aus­tralian home­own­ers are us­ing their garages as chil­dren’s play ar­eas. Ac­cord­ing to a re­cent poll by garage door man­u­fac­turer B&D Doors al­most 10 per cent of re­spon­dents to an on­line poll said they used their garages as recre­ational ar­eas for young­sters, rather than as car spa­ces. The com­pany says it is im­por­tant that garages are made safe and child-friendly. There are now child safety prod­ucts avail­able to make th­ese pseudo rum­pus rooms safer. For ex­am­ple, there are safety in­fra-red beams that al­low the door to au­to­mat­i­cally stop and re­verse with­out hit­ting a child if the beam is bro­ken while a child is play­ing near a clos­ing door.
