IT seems despite more units, apartments, townhouses and duplexes being built in cities, we still prefer the dream of living in our own freestanding home. According to analysis of the Census 2006 Australians like living in a detached house. Matusik Property Insights director Michael Matusik said that despite urban consolidation, 77 per cent of Australians still lived in freestanding homes. Even in the capital cities it was 72 per cent. And it’s not just families with children, with 81 per cent of couples without children living in detached housing, as do six out of 10 people living alone – again, even in the main cities throughout the country.
