IT seems de­spite more units, apart­ments, town­houses and du­plexes be­ing built in cities, we still pre­fer the dream of liv­ing in our own free­stand­ing home. Ac­cord­ing to anal­y­sis of the Cen­sus 2006 Aus­tralians like liv­ing in a de­tached house. Ma­tusik Prop­erty In­sights di­rec­tor Michael Ma­tusik said that de­spite ur­ban con­sol­i­da­tion, 77 per cent of Aus­tralians still lived in free­stand­ing homes. Even in the cap­i­tal cities it was 72 per cent. And it’s not just fam­i­lies with chil­dren, with 81 per cent of cou­ples with­out chil­dren liv­ing in de­tached hous­ing, as do six out of 10 peo­ple liv­ing alone – again, even in the main cities through­out the coun­try.
