It started as a one-man operation and 95 years later Hutchinson Builders now has more than 700 staff members working from many bases across Australia.

This year,y the company’sp y turnover will reach more than $1 billion up from $250 million in 2002, their 90th anniversary.

Since 2002 the direct employee numbers have also grown from 175 to more than 700.

Despite the obvious growth, Hutchinson Builders prides itself on being able to handle projects of any size and in almost any geographical location.

Hutchinson Builders’ headquarters are located in Brisbane but they also have offifices in Cairns, Townsville, Toowoomba, Sunshine Coast, Tweed, Sydney and Airlie Beach.

The latest expansion of the company also includes the commencement of major projects in Japan.

Founded by John Hutchinson in 1912, the company, four generations later, is the strongest it has ever been.

This is primarily the result of third generation Jack and fourth generation Scott.

Jack and Scott have worked together for more then 20 years without one argument.

“We have not always agreed, but we have always been able to talk it out,” Jack says. “I am very proud of what he has achieved.”

Greg Quinn, managing director of Hutchinson Builders, describes Hutchies as “a big family business that happens to handle a lot of work throughout Queensland and Australia”.

Greg said the company had the right formula and was intent on nurturing it into the future. “We have a great culture with very little hierarchy – we are structured into different teams, each capable of handling different types and numbers of projects.

Paul De Jong is the team leader for the Cairns offifice and has been with Hutchinson Builders for the past 17 years. Paul started working at the Brisbane offifice and then as a result of the close loyal relationships he had with existing clients, he travelled north to Emerald, Townsville and Port Douglas, fifinally settling in Cairns where the offifice was set up in 2001.

Paul is dedicated to keeping the Cairns offifice in unison with Hutchies, he says.

“In Cairns we pride ourselves on working closely with our clients, consultants, sub-contractors and suppliers to produce an A-class quality fifinish product,” Paul says.

The Cairns offifice has also seen a rapid expansion within its team. It has grown from a team of two working out of a site offifice at Stratford to the 35 who have outgrown their offifice on Sheridan St, prompting a move to new premises at Smithfifield.

The company has purchased a 2199sq m property at Smithfifield with an existing 1000sq m building which will become “Hutchies Yard” in Cairns.

“We have upgraded our facilities to keep up with the work that is taking place in Cairns. We are hoping to be in our new offifice early in 2008,” Paul says.

This year Hutchinson Builders has marked its 95th anniversary with a celebration including all staff from across all the regions which was held in Brisbane and also coincided with the offificial opening of the conpany’s new headquarters in Toowong.

Celebrations were also held in each region across Australia.
