EDUCATION

Employers of veterinary nurses look for tertiary qualifications. Many diploma or certificate courses require students to be working in the field. TAFE and independent colleges offer a Certificate III in Animal Studies to provide practical skills and knowledge needed to work as a junior veterinary nurse for those who have not yet gained a job in a clinic. External study options are available through the Australian Veterinary Nurse Resource Centre.

MORE TRAINING

A veterinary nurse qualification could be a stepping stone to further study and a career as a fully fledged veterinary surgeon or consultant. Students may choose to specialise in particular areas of veterinary nursing and undertake further study in areas like surgical nursing and emergency nursing either in Australia or internationally. Veterinary Nurses Council of Australia Inc also offers courses for further study.

PAY SCALE

The average salary of a veterinary nurse is $43,190 per annum. Experience, responsibilities and region employed could mean that figure fluctuates from $34,380 to $52,200 per annum.
