Woman fighting for life after horror pile-up

-

A WOMAN is fighting for her life after her car was reportedly rear-ended by a truck while stopped at roadworks.

The 35-year-old woman was flown to Townsville Hospital with critical head injuries yesterday afternoon, following the collision which took place just north of Tully about 10am.

The truck, which was travelling south from Cairns, is believed to have crashed into the rear of the woman’s Ford Ranger which was stopped at roadworks.

Her vehicle then hit a caravan and two vehicles in front, causing a multi-car pile up.

A police spokeswoman said the woman had to be cut from the car by firefighters.

She was taken to Tully Hospital before later being transferred to Townsville.

The crash caused significant delays and the Bruce Highway was closed in both directions.

Cairns Forensic Crash Unit Sen-Constable Leisa Vagg said police were investigating whether speed might have been a factor.

She said there were reduced speed limits operating in the area due to the road works.

None of the other drivers involved in the crash were taken to hospital.
