GIRAFFES and pelicans are child’s play for bearded dragon owner Orla O’Sullivan.

The 10-year-old and her scaly pal Lightning Bolt have been roommates at Holloways Beach for the last four months and have no plans of changing their current arrangement.

Orla said she loved unusual animals and reading about them in her favourite books, which almost all featured animals or magic.

“I’ve read some Roald Dahl books like Esio Trot and Matilda,” she said.

She said she liked having to use her imagination when she was reading.

“I’ve learnt quite a lot of vocabulary words from reading books,” she said.

“Everyone should be reading books, even if they’re younger than my brother, who’s eight.”

She said she planned to keep reading books about unusual creatures like dragons and wild animals.

The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me is the next title available to readers of the Cairns Post in the Roald Dahl library collection.
