The Weekend Post

Time to be cyclone-ready

- Nick Dalton nick.dalton@news.com.au

THE strong possibility of a cyclone forming in the Gulf of Carpentaria tomorrow is a wake-up call to all residents of the Far North.

Complacency has crept in after two failed wet seasons but the potential of cyclone Alfred has the highest levels of government on alert.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk convened a Queensland Disaster Management Committee in Brisbane yesterday afternoon when the status of a tropical low in the gulf and preparations for communities potentially affected were discussed.

Towns included in the ”watch” zone include those on Mornington Island and west from Burketown to the Northern Territory border.

At this stage the storm will have little impact on the Cairns region, although rainfall could increase if it crosses the Western Cape York coast.

This weekend is an ideal opportunity for all households to be fully prepared for a cyclone.

Pre-season preparation is the key to minimising danger and damage.

Preparation includes checking the security of buildings, such as the eaves, trimming tree-tops as well as removing loose items or material that may become airborne in high winds.

It is important to know the local area, especially if it is prone to storm surge and flooding. Find out the nearest safe high ground and plan how to access the area in an emergency.

An emergency kit should be prepared and kept in a safe and accessible location.

It’s a time to be alert, not alarmed. Being prepared and organised will ensure much higher levels of safety and security for you and your families.
