SHEEDY WAS AHEAD OF HIS TIME

The Weekend Post - - Sport -

Q ATell me about working with the great Kevin Sheedy?

I shared an office with him at Richmond while he was still playing. He worked in the schools promoting the game while still playing. At the end of 1980, he took the job coaching at Essendon under the proviso he had a recruiting man as the national draft was only a few years away from coming in. Sheedy (right) wanted to be a step ahead of everyone else. Being a Richmond person, it was a tough decision for me to go. Sheeds was fantastic to work with. He had a different philosophy on footy than what we grew up with. He wanted to bring a harder edge and he lifted the training standards.

QYou spent time at Essendon, Collingwood and Richmond. Do you consider yourself an Essendon person?

AI suppose so because we won four premierships that I was involved with. I got one at Collingwood too but I loved working at all three clubs. The move from Essendon to Collingwood in 1997 was a real challenge.
