Pet sit­ters and an­i­mal han­dlers of­ten ben­e­fit from for­mal ter­tiary study at reg­is­tered train­ing or­gan­i­sa­tions or uni­ver­si­ties but a lot of the ex­pe­ri­ence and knowl­edge needed for the po­si­tion can be ob­tained through on­the-job train­ing. Many of the per­sonal skills needed to do this job, how­ever, come from a nat­u­ral affin­ity and life­long ex­pe­ri­ence with an­i­mals. The in­dus­try is at­trac­tive be­cause of low in­put cost and few en­try bar­ri­ers.
