THE Cairns Dragon Boat Club have this week been taking on the best of the best at the 2017 Shanghai International Chinese Dragon Boat Invitational Tournament being held at Qing Pu District in Cao Gang River.

The Cairns club, including coach Chris Bradbury, Barry Richards, Anne Warnock, Pat Thomas, Helen Myhill, Mary Chung, Maria Donkers and Lorraine Stewart, started competition on Wednesday with the event to wrap up tomorrow.

Cairns Dragon Boat Club president Lorraine Stewart said the Far North team have joined with members of the Townsville Spitfires team, similar to when the two clubs joined ranks to represent FNQ at Pan Pac Masters Games.

“Our club was the first in Cairns to receive this invitation and two groups have been over the past five years and we also hosted the two Chinese coaches when they came out here four years ago,” Stewart said.

“As China is where Dragon Boating originated we will experience all the culture of the opening and closing ceremonies of the tournament. We hope to bring back ideas … of the tradition for our regattas.”
