INSPIRED BMX riders will travel to Townsville today for the start of the 2017 BMX State Championships, which start on Monday.

Several Cairns BMX Club riders have recently returned from the World Championships in the US, including Portia Eden (above) and Shannon Petre, who received world plates for reaching the final.

Cairns BMX Club president Harald Weber said their successful return was a huge boost for young riders, many of them heading to state titles for the first time among an army of 59 riders.

“Within the club certainly they’re respected as a rider and everyone thinks they’re legends for having competed and performed well,” he said.

Petre, Ronan Weber and Wade Mundie will compete in the elite open “Superclass” alongside Ammie Delai, stepping up to the top level for the first time. The state titles run from Monday until Sunday, September 24.
