Security footage helps catch alleged rapist
SECURITY camera footage from a business has proved key in the arrest of a man accused of sexually assaulting a young tourist in Cardwell’s main street.
The 35-year-old Gold Coast man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared in the Innisfail Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with rape, assault with intent to commit rape and deprivation of liberty.
He was arrested by police just hours after he allegedly attacked the 18-year-old foreign tourist, then sexually assaulted her behind a Victoria St business, about 11pm on Tuesday night.
Cassowary Coast police Insp Steve Kersley said it was alleged the woman eventually managed to flee from the man and sought help.
The incident is understood to have shocked the small coastal community with police praising residents for their support.
“The community input has been excellent, people rallied to assist us,” Insp Kersley said.
“We were able to identify the alleged offender using the woman’s description and CCTV footage.
“Police located him in the early hours (of Wednesday morning).”
The man was remanded in custody and the case is due to return to court on January 18 next year.
