Netball in Far North expansion

- JORDAN GERRANS

MORE Far North communities are about to benefit from Netball Queensland’s Diamond Spirit program.

Formerly known as the Indigenous Advancement program, Diamond Spirit has already made a positive impact in the lives of more than 1000 participants in the Far North Queensland communities of Aurukun, Mapoon, Napranum and Yarrabah.

Netball Queensland CEO Catherine Clark believes the program is a central pillar of her organisation’s vision to transform lives through netball.

“We are passionate about supporting improved participation, education, health and leadership outcomes and creating a really meaningful connection between netball and Indigenous women and girls,” Clark said.

“Our sport is unique in that it was created and grown for women and by women. We believe netball enriches the lives of women and girls and want to ensure all women have access to netball.”

The program focuses on a holistic community engagement program that uses netball as a vehicle to engage, empower and educate indigenous girls in remote and regional communities.

Diamond Spirit is funded by the Queensland Government Department of Sport, Recreation and Racing. In 2018 Diamond Spirit will expand support to three more communities thanks to funding from the Embracing 2018 Sport Grants Program.
