“These and any other in­ter­na­tional routes we se­cure open up di­rect ac­cess for vis­i­tors com­ing to Cairns and Great Bar­rier Reef. They also con­trib­ute to­wards shift­ing some of the cur­rent 80 per cent of in­ter­na­tional pas­sen­gers who ar­rive into and de­part from Cairns on do­mes­tic ser­vices on to ded­i­cated in­ter­na­tional flights.”

He said open­ing up more di­rect flights to Cairns was on the ta­ble for Cairns Air­port staff as they worked to se­cure al­ter­na­tive di­rect routes to the re­gion to en­tice more in­ter­na­tional vis­i­tors to Far North Queens­land.

“Our avi­a­tion de­vel­op­ment team is con­tin­u­ously li­ais­ing with in­ter­na­tional air­lines that could po­ten­tially of­fer new di­rect ser­vices into Cairns,” he said.
