Nostalgia reboots family road trip tradition

- MICHAEL WRAY

NOSTALGIA, adventure and a desire to explore Queensland are driving a resurgence in demand for family road trips.

A national survey of 1000 holiday-makers conducted on behalf of Tourism and Events Queensland found that 40 per cent of Queenslanders believed Australians should ditch overseas tours and cruises in favour of a country road trip.

Naomi Dorland of Alderley, in Brisbane, has travelled to the western and northern tips of the state and many places in between with her husband and six-year-old twins, Alexis and Oliver, and said road trips were the best holidays.

“We just live in a beautiful part of the world,” she said.

“Look at all the people who want to come and live here, so we think ‘let’s make the most of it’.”

Nearly half the Queenslanders surveyed said driving trips were the main type of holiday they experienced as children. About a quarter of Baby Boomers believed the next generations should experience road trips similar to the ones they took as youth.

The research also identified a new type of traveller: freedom nesters who found it easier to go on vacation because they had adult children living at home who could look after the house and pets.
