Al­gae warn­ing for Alexan­dra Lake

Ararat Ru­ral City Coun­cil has warned the pub­lic to avoid di­rect con­tact with con­tam­i­nated wa­ter from Alexan­dra Lake af­ter the dis­cov­ery of toxic blue-green al­gae.

The coun­cil warn­ing in­cludes the con­sump­tion of fish or other crus­taceans col­lected from the lake. Di­rect con­tact with blue-green al­gae can cause skin rashes or itch­i­ness; sore eyes, ears and nose or if swal­lowed, gas­troen­teri­tis, nau­sea or vom­it­ing. The al­gae can be fa­tal to dogs and other an­i­mals if in­gested.

The coun­cil will con­tinue to mon­i­tor con­di­tions at the lake. Peo­ple seek­ing more in­for­ma­tion can call the coun­cil’s health depart­ment 5355 0262.
