Algae warning for Alexandra Lake
Ararat Rural City Council has warned the public to avoid direct contact with contaminated water from Alexandra Lake after the discovery of toxic blue-green algae.
The council warning includes the consumption of fish or other crustaceans collected from the lake. Direct contact with blue-green algae can cause skin rashes or itchiness; sore eyes, ears and nose or if swallowed, gastroenteritis, nausea or vomiting. The algae can be fatal to dogs and other animals if ingested.
The council will continue to monitor conditions at the lake. People seeking more information can call the council’s health department 5355 0262.
