Lions support Avenue of Honour

A new Avenue of Honour that lines Patrick Street in Stawell has a strong Lions connection.

When Stawell Lions Club decided to provide financial support to the Avenue of Honour project, it was pointed out to the members that not only was it 100 years since the First World War, it was also the centenary of Lionism. Accordingly, Stawell Lions Club took on the project as a centenary project.

The club appointed Robert Kelly as project chairman and Iain Maclean as secretary. The pair drove the project.

Stawell Lions Club raised $2640 and Australian Lions Foundation supported the Stawell club on a dollar-for-dollar basis. In total, $5280 was raised.

An honour roll features at the library end of the Avenue of Honour.

The roll lists the names of the district servicemen who sacrificed their lives in the ‘Great War’.

At the London Road end is another stone commemorating these men, flanked by two smaller stones, welcoming people to Stawell and acknowledging Stawell Lions Club and the Australian Lions Foundation.
