The State Govern­ment has in­tro­duced a Par­lia­men­tary Bill to im­prove Vic­to­ria’s power-line safety stan­dards and bet­ter pro­tect Vic­to­ri­ans from bush­fires caused by power-line faults.

The Elec­tric­ity Safety Amend­ment – Bush­fire Mit­i­ga­tion Civil Penal­ties Scheme – Bill 2017, in­cludes a civil penal­ties com­pli­ance regime to en­sure power-line bush­fire safety stan­dards are met – and in rea­son­able time­frames.

The Bill pro­poses changes to the Elec­tric­ity Safety Act 1998 to en­sure dis­tri­bu­tion busi­nesses de­liver en­hanced net­work safety tech­nolo­gies.

A Horsham fire, which burnt 5700 hectares in­clud­ing Horsham Golf Club and eight houses, was caused by a fallen power line at Rem­law, west of the city.
