Bright start to season

The Weekly Advertiser Horsham - - Sport -

The summer season of Volleyball Horsham’s C Grade and junior competitions was off to a bright start on Monday night with the highlight being the overwhelming support for the sport.

More than 120 players participated from juniors right through to C Grade ranks, with many new faces showing good form and some old faces shaking off the rust in a big way.

In C Grade, Blue Group, Team Alpha Wolf Squadron picked up where it left off last season, recording a good win over Murtoa in a highly entertaining game.

Evie Wallace set well for Team Alpha, combining with Brittany Baker who hit winners to all corners of the court.

Cleo Baker and Eadie Garth-lindsay kept Murtoa in the game.

In a Red Group, Deadly Spikers had their revenge on the Piccolo Nuggets from last year’s grand final with a solid straight-sets win.

The Deadly Spikers were well served by Jordan Lyall and Max Coleman, who were clever with their placement of the ball.

The Piccolo Nuggets, sporting four new faces from last year’s grand final side, tried everything to win points but were thwarted by Coleman and Lyall. New players Reid Davison and Isabella Nuske showed glimpses of good form.

In the juniors, a new-look Saints White, with Vanrika Heldt and Chloe Kelm displaying good skills, was too strong for the young HC Rebels, winning in straight sets.

Yasinta Grosser tried hard for the Rebels.

A and B grade competitions get underway tonight with Phantoms under Tim Popple’s leadership taking on Nathan Berry’s new look Volleyroos.

Last year’s premiers Malakos Nuggets also take on a newlook Rhubarb Blue.

The promoted Saints will receive a tough initiation from experienced Waterhammers in the B Grade opener.

The young Saints boys have stepped into senior competition for the first time and will look to put into practice what they have learnt over the past year.

In other games, Von Steiger Shadows battle Energetic Educators and reigning premiers Phantom Masters take on the new-look Phantom Rangers.
