Rain, football and netball go hand in hand

- BY COURTNEY CLOUGH

I’m on a boat! Well, I wish was on a boat, sunbaking on the Greek Islands or somewhere warm in Europe – like half of the Wimmera population.

Wouldn’t that be nice, or according to social media, rather common? I’m kidding. I’ve always loved the rain, because that usually means it’s footy and netball season.

Minyip-murtoa Burras will welcome a travelling Ararat side in Wimmera Netball Association this week and there are plenty of reasons to sneak a look at this tussle.

You see, if you want pressure, speed and talent, you’ll get it, as both sides will want to get the first break as they look to get an early winning edge. I’ve written about it most of the season, the Rats must use their midcourt speed on the Burras. With a blistering midcourt comes early ball release into the ring from Jess Williamson and Lauren Armstrong, which can catch defenders off guard and with their eyes down.

If executed correctly, Ararat can score goals quickly before hustling into defensive mode, led by experienced Rebecca Skrabl.

A well-coached Burras side will have plenty of tricks up its sleeve. While you can expect sharpshooter Kirby Knight up front, they have options through the corridors. If the Rats can stay with the Burras, it could be a thriller.

Stawell Warriors will travel up the highway to Dimboola. While some consider the Warriors a slim chance to play finals, they just need to go for it. Stawell must come to play from the first whistle. The Roos have their own destiny in their hands. A win puts them one step closer to a potential top-three finish.

If Nhill wants to see where it is at, then it will get a big taste when it fronts reigning premier Horsham on Saturday.

The Tigers are playing on confidence. They have youth and experience all over the court, but they have also developed some internal belief.

The Demons won’t take any visitor lightly, and will look to get away to their trademark quick start. If they catch anyone napping it could be a tough outing.

For the Tigers, like any other team, it’s about measuring up to the top sides. They need to run with them and to compete strongly. If they do and produce the one-percenters week in, week out, anything is possible.

Warrack Eagles will welcome Horsham Saints to Anzac Park in Warracknabeal and you can expect this to be a fierce battle.

Both sides shouldn’t underestimate each other, nor should they pay attention to past results as they prepare to return to the winners list.

The Eagles need a win to stay in touch with finishing in the top three, and a win for the Saints will result in an upwards march towards the top five.
