Building to be demolished
A former Stawell maternal and child health centre is set for demolition in the coming months as part of Northern Grampians Shire Council’s land and building rationalisation policy.
The site will become a new open space in the heart of the town.
An infrastructure department assessment of the building found it structurally unsound, with the issue compounded by the presence of asbestos.
Mayor Tony Driscoll said the demolition would lessen the financial burden of maintaining a building not suitable for public use.
“This council is committed to saving our ratepayers money where possible, and by no longer paying the costs associated with maintaining this building, we will be delivering considerable savings to the community,” he said.
“The addition of further parkland and open space will also provide a boost to the already outstanding aesthetic appeal of the Stawell town centre.”
