Plea to teenagers
The State Government is urging teenagers aged from 15 to 19 across the region to get free meningococcal vaccinations.
There have been six cases of meningococcal reported in a departmental region stretching from Ballarat to the Victorian-south Australian border this year.
Protection against the deadly disease takes up to two weeks after receiving the vaccination.
Department of Health and Human Services figures reveal the six cases of meningococcal in the ‘Grampians’ region included one in Northern Grampians and Hepburn municipalities and four in Ballarat.
The arrival of the warmer weather heralds the peak time for meningococcal disease, which can be spread through close social contact such as kissing, coughing or sneezing.
