Nhill com­mu­nity set to cel­e­brate

Nhill com­mu­nity is busy pre­par­ing for an­nual Karen New Year cel­e­bra­tions on Jan­uary 6.

This year the town will cel­e­brate the 2757 year on the Karen cal­en­dar, which started in 739BC when the Karen peo­ple mi­grated to Burma.

Cel­e­bra­tions will be at Nhill Me­mo­rial Com­mu­nity Cen­tre from 10am un­til 1pm where a pro­gram will in­clude cul­tural per­for­mances, such as the tra­di­tional done dance, bam­boo dance and a per­for­mance de­pict­ing the his­tory of the Karen peo­ple. Nhill’s Karen com­mu­nity will pro­vide lunch for at­ten­dees.

Hindmarsh Shire Coun­cil will also use the oc­ca­sion to launch its Karen Com­mu­nity Plan 2017-2021 be­fore sport­ing com­pe­ti­tions in­clud­ing vol­ley­ball, soc­cer and the tra­di­tional Karen sport of cane ball start at Davis Park at 2pm.
