Sun safety for St Arnaud square

The Weekly Advertiser Horsham - - News -

St Arnaud families will soon be able to make use of the town’s Market Square playground without having to worry about the dangerous effects of the sun, thanks to the installation of a large shade sail funded by the State Government.

Backed by a $40,000 grant from the Community Shade Grants Program, the 20-metre by 14-metre shade sail will cover a large section of the playground, protecting users from harmful UV rays.

Northern Grampians Shire mayor and Kara Kara ward representative Tony Driscoll said the project focused on protecting future generations from the harsh Australian sun while still allowing them to remain active.

“Australia has one of the highest incidences of skin cancer of any country in the world, so it’s important that we provide adequate protection around popular play areas,” he said.

“Every year, there are about 750,000 skin cancers treated in Australia, which equates to more than 2000 skin cancer treatments a day – the last thing we want is for one of our young people to become a part of those statistics.”
