‘Give and take’ key to longevity

Hor­sham cou­ple Doris and Hugh Mcdon­ald will cel­e­brate 70 years of mar­riage on Tues­day.

The Mc­don­alds said they looked for­ward to mark­ing their plat­inum an­niver­sary with their six chil­dren, 13 grand­chil­dren, 30 great-grand­chil­dren and friends at Hor­sham City Bowl­ing Club on Satur­day.

Hugh, 94, and Doris, 93, mar­ried at Cam­ber­well Our Lady of Vic­to­ries Basil­ica in 1948. They said they had en­joyed play­ing sport to­gether through­out their mar­riage.

The Mc­don­alds have played ten­nis and golf and only re­cently gave up play­ing bowls.

The cou­ple lived in Mel­bourne and Launce­s­ton, Tas­ma­nia, be­fore mov­ing to Hor­sham, where they re­mem­ber buy­ing one of the first re­frig­er­a­tors that came to town.

Mrs Mcdon­ald said she and her hus­band be­lieved their sim­i­lar in­ter­ests and good for­tune were to thank for their suc­cess­ful mar­riage.

“It’s all about give and take… although I’ve taken more than I’ve given,” she said.

Mr Mcdon­ald was quick to dis­agree: “Don’t know about that.”
