Court rap for Morales

The West Australian - - WORLD -

Guatemala’s highest court has ruled that President Jimmy Morales cannot expel the head of a UN anti-corruption commission from the country.

Mr Morales issued his expulsion order on Sunday, two days after Ivan Velasquez and the chief Guatemalan prosecutor said they would seek to lift Mr Morales’ immunity from prosecution to probe alleged illegal campaign financing.

But the Constitutional Court on Tuesday negated Mr Morales’ order declaring Mr Velasquez persona non grata. It ruled the order was issued improperly.

The UN panel and local prosecutors have built popularity among many Guatemalans over the past decade by attacking corruption in Guatemala.
